Over the last three weeks The Rediscovery Centre has delivered a module on design thinking and resource efficiency to MSc students at DIT studying Sustainable Development and Local Innovation and Development.
Taking a hands on approach, the module focuses on the development of practical skills to foster behavioural changes with regard to waste management. Innovative thinking was encouraged and tested through a variety of group design challenges, culminating in a dragons’ den-style presentation, during which students pitched prototype products designed from a selection of waste materials.

I was delighted to be involved in the project alongside fellow judges/dragons Kieron Phillips, Environmental Protection Agency and Jennie Flynn, Owner of Designist.
The participants impressed us with an innovative yet practical mix of prototypes and concepts, all demonstrating great creativity, particularly given the short time available and the limited materials they had at their disposal. Each group gave due consideration to sustainable sourcing, smart design and general market appeal .
The eventual winners, Niall and Jordana, designed the “Pogo” bike rack, a revolutionary bike storage system for urban living and a very useful invention should they ever go into production!
The future of innovative, thoughtful and sustainable design looks bright. An inspirational initiative and I was delighted to be involved.
The five day programme was designed and developed by The Rediscovery Centre with the support of The Environmental Protection Agency.
